In 1958, Pastor David Wilkerson left his Pennsylvania church and traveled to New York City after reading about seven teenagers on trial for murder. What happened next became the foundation for one of the world's most successful addiction recovery programs.Wilkerson's story—chronicled in his bestseller The Cross and the Switchblade—began as an outreach to gang members and drug addicts in the streets of Brooklyn. His radical approach combined Christian faith with practical support, proving that lasting change was possible.
Today, Teen Challenge International operates over 1,100 centers in more than 130 countries, helping tens of thousands break free from addiction each year. Alabama Adult & Teen Challenge has been putting hope within reach across our state for over five decades. With four residential centers serving men and women, we continue Wilkerson's legacy—combining Christ-centered discipleship, proven life-coaching & mentoring methods, and vocational training to address the root causes of addiction and restore broken lives.
Lasting freedom from addiction requires transformation from the inside out—addressing spiritual, relational, and practical needs through Christ-centered recovery.
Addiction is a spiritual issue that requires a spiritual solution. We help participants build a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through daily Scripture study, prayer, and worship.
Recovery doesn't happen in isolation. Our residential program creates a Christ-centered family where participants find acceptance, accountability, and lasting support.
We prepare participants for life after graduation through vocational training at ATC Graphics, Lawn Services, and Thrift Store—learning work ethic while building real job skills.

As we step into 2026, Alabama Adult & Teen Challenge is entering a new season with expectation, faith, and clarity. We are declaring this year as The Year of Fruition.

At Alabama Adult & Teen Challenge, recovery is not just about breaking free from addiction. It's about restoring lives, rebuilding relationships, and reconnecting families — especially during the Christmas season.

James Hughes knows what it feels like to hit rock bottom. After a 14-year spiral of drug abuse, multiple arrests, and imprisonment, James found himself with nowhere else to turn. The choices that once seemed manageable had destroyed relationships, stolen his freedom, and left him hopeless. But God had other plans.

Not all addiction recovery programs are created equal. While traditional treatment centers focus primarily on behavioral modification and symptom management, Alabama Adult & Teen Challenge takes a different approach.
Through your prayers, financial support, or volunteer time, you help men and women break free from addiction and discover life-changing purpose through Christ.
